Tips for you: Be aware of Distractions! 😬

November 24, 2020

Hope you've been having a great week! As part of our helpful tips content, here's a good one based on my customer discovery interviews!

How to avoid distraction!

If you're loving Office Otter, then you probably can't afford to get distracted ever!

According to a study from the University of California-Irvine, that return to your original focus, following a distraction, takes, on average, a full 23 minutes and 15 seconds.

Distractions also have the potential to occupy far more than just a few minutes of our time. Most social media apps, for example, are designed to be addictive; they give you just enough of a reward to keep you using them; they provide no sense of completeness because of their infinite-scrolling potential and they constantly give you notifications so you can see what’s new.

In light of this, here are some tips for you:

  1. Identify how communication channels can be distracting βœ‰οΈ

Checking your email or chat messages as soon as they come in can often be incredibly distracting, especially if they're not urgent.

2. Try only checking inboxes at the Beginning of the Day, End of Day, or only once an hour. πŸ“²
If you can get through your inbox all at once multiple times a day, it's much more efficient than checking it 20x a day every time a new message comes in!

3. Turn off your Desktop or Popup notifications for as many apps as possible.
